学修目標(到達目標) By the end of the course, students will have acquired greater knowledge about language learning theories, and culture in the English-speaking countries.
Also, students will be able to understand the English spoken in natural settings, read literary texts and passages related to nursing, write effectively and communicate in simple English.
授業概要(教育目的・準備学修・事後学修・履修要件等) The primary goal of this course is to improve students’ integrated language skills using class materials that deal with a wide range of topics including culture, science, and nursing. In order to help students prepare for more advanced courses in the later years, class activities also involve other skills; listening, speaking, and writing.
The course prepares students for independent language learning in the future.
The course is designed to expose students to cultures of English-speaking countries and to develop students’ cultural competence.

In principle, students are required to spend 3 hours on preparing/reviewing each class and working on assignments. Students with lower proficiency are advised to focus more on reviewing each class.
授業内容 In learning a foreign language, quality inputs matter most. This course is designed to allow students to have quality inputs through materials on American history, health policies of the United States, lectures on FN and nursing, videos on foreigners living in Japan, science fictions featuring emerging technologies, passages from literature, film trailers. Each class consists of independent and group tasks, lectures, and assignments.
Students are encouraged to enjoy conversations with peers in English.

授業形式・授業形態 授業内では基本的に英語（必要に応じて日本語）を用いる。ポイントを中心に解説するほか、毎回の授業の中で基礎的な事項を確認する。個人・グループで課題に取り組む時間を設ける。提出物等については指示に従うこと。クラス内の小テストについても範囲や様態を随時指定する。オンライン受講で小テストを受けられない場合は最終試験に合わせて追試験を受けること。WebClass等で配布資料や動画のURL等を参照できるようにする予定。
成績評価方法（成績評価基準を含む） 小テスト含む平常点（30%）および定期試験の成績（70%）から総合的に評価する。①全回出席を前提とする。出席は加点の対象とせず、正当な理由（忌引き、病欠、交通機関の遅延など）がない場合の欠席・遅刻・早退は減点の対象とする。かつ、正当な理由のない欠席が授業回数の三分の一を超える場合は、期末試験の受験資格を与えず、単位の認定もしない。 ②期末試験の得点率が60%を下回った場合は、出席率に関わらず、単位を認定しない。
