学修目標(到達目標) The goals for this course are:
-to develop competence in English speaking and listening skills in one-on-one conversation, in group discussion, and in short speeches and presentations.
-to develop autonomy in language study for life-long learning.
授業概要(教育目的・準備学修・事後学修・履修要件等) The course will mostly consist of pair and group speaking activities, role-plays, and regular presentations. There will also be readings and film clips on how culture influences the way that people communicate. Attention will be given to voice quality (intonation, stress, accent, rhythm, volume) and body language (eye contact, gestures, posture). Students will participate in choosing culture and science topics for discussion. Each student will develop and give an individual presentation developed over the semester with peer-support in groups of four, and with guidance from the teacher.

授業形式・授業形態 A student-centered approach will be used.
成績評価方法（成績評価基準を含む） Students will be evaluated according to their attendance and class participation (40%), the quality of completed assignments (40%), and quizzes and exams (20%).
テキスト（教科書等） There is no assigned textbook. Prints will be supplied by the teacher. Students will sometimes be asked to bring newspapers or other materials to class.
